Duel In The Pool

The BBC event Duel In The Pool was held in the
Manchester Aquatics Centre, the requirements of the
event meant that the final seating solution had to
overcome the challenge of sitting astride the
main diving pool.

Project Details:

The prestigious Duel In The Pool swimming event hosted at the Manchester Aquatics Centre proved to be extremely successful, due in part to the efforts of our Events Division and the timely completion of the two main seating grandstands.

The Aquatics Centre is a modern facility with unique architectural features including steeply sloping rooflines in the form of waves. The seating provision for the event had to be flexible enough to fit within the variable constraints of the buildings' roofline but also able to give the spectators a clear view of the gala.
Slick's new C View system was the perfect choice to satisy both critera.

In addition to the demands of the architecture, the only positional choice for the grandstand was toward the ends of the pool, unfortunately there was no 'floor' only swimming pool.

Extreme design measures were needed to overcome this technical challenge. The Events Division came to the rescue with a suspended grandstand design, the stand would literally be suspended over the pool using a latticework of steel trusses to form a solid platform.

This lattice platform would then allow the seating scaffold to be constructed directly on top of the steel beams.

Two stands were constructed at either end of the Aquatics Centre one with capacity for 779 people and the other slightly larger stand housing 958 people.

The C View system gave the spectators an unrivalled view of the proceedings due to its unique variable rake adjustment the system can be altered between several different rakes all using standard components.

The event was a huge success, Sharon Davies hosted the event for the BBC and many famous american and european athletes were in attendance.
